It took Conor McGregor just 40 seconds to knock out his opponent in T-Mobile Arena and reestablish himself as the potential king of MMA. It was all it took to earn a first-round TKO of Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone on his return in the cage.
The Irishman looked quick, powerful and relentless in his first appearance in the Octagon after 15 months out of the picture, who literally pounded Cowboy with continuous powerful strikes until referee Herb Dean stopped the bout.
Now with the UFC fighting world at his feet once again, questions of who he will be up against next started quickly to emerge in the aftermath of his record win at UFC 246. And following the first UFC card of 2020, here are some of the most persistent names rumored to be on the agenda for McGregor.
A potential fight in the making. The American Gaethje has a habit of being involved in extremely heart wrenching fight bouts which is exactly the reason why it would be a dangerous fight for McGregor to participate in. For as much danger this guy brings, he presents a most ideal style match-up for McGregor’s strengths as an explosive counter-puncher.
Odds to Fight: 1.77/2.00
Should this fight happen, it would be the third time the pair face off which is why the potential showdown is being labelled as the ‘Trilogy Bout’. Following his epic rematch in 2016, McGregor even promised he would give Diaz a third fight. With one triumph apiece, a third encounter represents a massive and thrilling fight.
Odds to Fight: 1.36/3.05
Perhaps one of the top three fights the UFC could put on in 2020. This would be a massive fight if it does indeed take place. Masvidal had a breakthrough 2019. His 16th year in his MMA career, and he plans on venturing that into the most lucrative fights he can establish in 2020.
The stand-up battle between the pair would allow McGregor’s skills to stand out as much as it would for Masvidal. While this fight remains a unlikely possibility at this stage, many wonder how the fight would pan out should the superstars come head to head.
Odds to Fight: 2.35/1.57
A fight against the man who knocked him out 15 months ago can never be ruled out at this stage. In fact, it is what McGregor wants most. A rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov.
The level of existing bad blood between the pair means a rematch is almost inevitable. Given the toxic relationship which has developed ever since Nurmagomedov completely dominated his opponent that night – a rematch is undoubtedly the most tantalizing option for McGregor and UFC fans.
Odds to Fight: 3.50/1.29
There are unsurprisingly a number of viable options for McGregor to dwell on, and if he decides to stick to what he recently said about having an extremely busy and active 2020, UFC fans may see him sooner rather than later whether it will be the Octagon or a boxing ring.
